Big And Tall Mens Clothing For The Love Of Your Life

If you have ever shopped for big and tall mens clothing, you know how difficult it is sometimes. Most clothing stores don’t stock mens clothing beyond size XL in shirts or 40-42 in pants. Big and tall men have other considerations as well. Tall men may find that the length of pants avaiable make them look as though they are dressed for a flood. Long sleeved shirts become elbow length and jackets leave them with an exposed area on their backs. Where can they find clothing that is comfortable and flattering for them?

Things have improved in recent years, but clothing for big and tall men is not nearly as widely available as plus sized clothing for women. My husband used to joke that I should call Omar the Tentmaker when he needed something new because I could not run into a department store and find something that would fit. Buying clothing usually involved a trip of twenty or so miles to a Big and Tall Mans store. The selection was limited in those days. They rarely carried jeans or anything remotely trendy. Did they think he wanted to wear dress pants and shirts all the time? They were also way more expensive and had a “take it or leave it attitude.”

Thank goodness that J.C. Penney and Sears carried larger sizes, not in the store of course. You could order from the catalog though, so planning purchases ahead of time was essential. Of course even if you measured carefully, there was always a chance it would not fit and you would be faced with the dreaded return process.

I often wondered where the well dressed larger doctors and lawyers got their clothing.

They often had them custom tailored, not an affordable option for most of us. I can remember once my husband wanted a denim vest and I could not find one in any catalog. When I expressed my disappointment to my grandmother, she promptly got out her tape measure and a pile of newspaper and made me a pattern. I made the vest and he wore it out.

These days some department stores, K-mart and Wal-mart now have extended sizes for men. They are a little more expensive, but not outrageous. Big and Tall Casual Male has stores across the country and carries high quality and some designer clothing. They also offer alterations for a perfect fit and carry harder to find items like underwear, belts, socks, and bathrobes. King Size Catalog has a very large selection of reasonably priced clothing and accessories for the big and tall man with sizes up to 6X and shirt and pant lengths for the tallest customers. They also carry shoes in hard to find sizes and triple E widths in a variety of styles. The clothing, in my experience, is durable and attractive. We get a catalog several times a month and almost weekly sale offers via email. They offer discounts on almost all multiple purchases of the same type item. One thing many mothers of larger teens will love is that they carry some very trendy clothing. The larger teen can have trendy jeans, logo t-shirts and sportswear just like everyone else.

Big and tall mens clothing is still not as available as plus size clothing for women, but it’s getting there. With internet shopping, you can order almost anything you want and get it in a reasoanble period of time, but I know all big and tall men and their wives will be happy when they can walk into a mall anytime and come out with something new that fits.
